It’s hard to believe that 2Pac has gone from us almost 29 years now. Before he passed away, Pac left us with a lot of memories and great music. Me Against the World was one of those masterpieces and it turns 30 years old today. Me Against the World was the third album he dropped, and it was well received. This was the follow-up to his Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z. album and it was released while he was in jail. Me Against the World debuted atop the charts and spent four consecutive weeks in that position. The album would go on to sell over two million copies. It was nominated for Best Rap Album at the Grammy Awards. Dear Mama, was the first single and it was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance. Dear Mama is one of Pac’s all-time greatest hits.
Dear Mama was one of 25 recordings selected for preservation at the National Recording Registry in the Library of Congress in 2010. It became the third hip hop song to acquire such a feat. The track has been listed on a lot of best songs categories over the years. LA Weekly placed the song 6 on their list of the 20 Best Hip-Hop Songs in History. Eminem, Common, Kendrick Lamar and many other rappers have talked about how great and inspiring Dear Mama is. The single went triple platinum and Afeni Shakur appeared in the video. So Many Tears was the second single, and it dropped a few days before his 24th birthday. So Many Tears is another classic record from Pac and from the album. Years later, this track felt like one of the first tracks talking about mental health.
So Many Tears is another one of my favorite joints from 2Pac. The third and final single from the album was Temptations. As we all know, 2Pac was still in jail so the video featured appearances from a lot of his supporters. Adina Howard, B-Real, Bill Bellamy, Salt, DJ Spinderella, Coolio, Ice-T, Isaac Hayes, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and many others appeared. The video for Temptations turned out great and it’s another great record from the album. I’ve stated many times over the years that Me Against the World is my favorite album of all time. Listening to this album 30 years later puts me in a great place. Many people will say All Eyez on Me or even the Makaveli album, but this is my joint right here.
