Outkast Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik Turns 30 Years Old

Outkast is viewed as one of the greatest groups hip hop has ever produced. Last year, they were voted as the greatest group of all time by Billboard magazine. They have dropped a total of six studio albums together. The last two released were for a movie soundtrack and a double album with them dropping solo joints. The last official Outkast project came back in 2000 and it was the Stankonia joint. Andre 3000 stepped away from music and done some acting while Big Boi continued to put out music. Big Boi started a label and has also dropped three solo projects from 2010 to 2017. 3 Stacks appeared on numerous albums over the years and has never released a solo rap album. Last year, 3 Stacks dropped the New Blue Sun project, but it was him playing the flute.

The fans are still wanting an Outkast reunion album or at least a solo Andre 3000 hip hop joint. 3 Stacks has stated he wants to do a rap album but doesn’t think the fans would embrace it. Let’s go back to the mid-90s when Outkast first hit the scene and they released their debut album. The album was called Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik and it changed Atlanta hip hop forever. Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik turns 30 years old today and it also changed the feeling towards hip hop in the south. Towards the end of 1993, they released their first single from the album called Player’s Ball. Player’s Ball would become the #1 rap song in the country and go gold in the process. The production was handled by Organized Noise, which is significant seeing one of their founding members just passed away. Rico Wade was that member and he passed on April 12th.

The album was doing great in a genre where the East and West Coast were dominating the charts. In July of 1994, Outkast released their second single and it was the title track to the album. Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik was the single and it was another dope track from Outkast. Despite its popularity, it never achieved the success of their previous single Player’s Ball. The album went on to sell over a million copies, which was great during this era. In October of 1994, they would release their third and final single Git Up Git Out. Git Up Git Out introduced the world to the Goodie Mob. In the first verse, Cee-Lo Green spit one of the illlest verses and he instantly became someone we wanted to hear more from. The Goodie Mob would release their group album the following year in November.

Git Up Git Out didn’t get the same buzz as Player’s Ball, but it’s still considered a classic track. Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik received a lot of praise from critics, fans, and other artists during this time. It has been called one of the most important and influential albums ever in hip hop. The album has also been on many lists of greatest albums over the years. Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik is my #3 in my top 5 albums from Outkast. Check out my top 5 tracks from the album.
