Welcome to the final day of July. With it being August, that means the children will be returning to school. It also means that football season is upon us, and it couldn’t get here fast enough. The Hall of Fame game between the Los Angeles Chargers and Detroit Lions will take place tonight. There has been some headline news over the past week. The first one is the passing of wrestling icon Hulk Hogan. Hogan was 71 years old, and his passing has been met with controversy. While Hogan is credited for bringing wrestling mainstream, he’s made inappropriate comments about her daughter dating a black man. The MLB family lost an absolute legend with the passing of Ryne Sandberg. Sandberg was one of my favorite baseball players growing up and was one of the greatest Chicago Cubs ever.
Another legend announced a health scare, and it was none other than Deion Sanders. Sanders announced he had cancer, but had his bladder removed and is now cancer-free. This weekend, the WWE will have its first-ever 2-night Summerslam event. The card is stacked, and Cardi B will be the host of the event.
In the music world, we celebrated a couple of anniversaries of a pair of classics. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and their E. 1999 Eternal turned 30, and Jeezy’s Thug Motivation 101 turned 20. My playlist this week consisted of the two albums mentioned above. Nas’s Illmatic, Da Brat’s debut album, and Teflon Don from Rick Ross also played. My featured track is from the only R&B album that was in my rotation this week. Monica and her debut album, Miss Thang, made the list this week. Monica released her debut album at the age of 14 years old.
Miss Thang would go triple platinum, and her first single set the tone. Don’t Take It Personal was the single, and it’s my featured Throwback Thursday track of the week. It sold 1.2 million copies domestically and earned a platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America on July 16, 1995. The song spent two weeks at number one on the US Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart and peaked at number two for three nonconsecutive weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. It also reached the top of Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Sales chart and the Rhythmic chart and peaked at number two on the Dance Singles Sales chart. Don’t Take It Personal alongside follow-up single Before You Walk Out of My Life, would make Monica the youngest recording artist to have two consecutive number-one hits on the Billboard R&B chart at the age of fourteen.
