I’ve mentioned about how hip hop in the 90s produced some of the best music. In 1995, there were a lot of classics to came out that year. Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Me Against the World, Dogg Food and E. 1999 Eternal are just a few of them. The Luniz hit the scene in the spring of 1995 with their classic joint I Got 5 On It. I Got 5 On It became a huge hit and sold well over a million copies. As we all know, this is an anthem about the consumption of marijuana. In 2022, Pitchfork ranked “I Got 5 on It” one of “The 250 Best Songs of the 1990s”. A remixed single and video were released to promote the album.
The song was remixed by the original producer, Tone Capone, and features additional vocal performances by fellow Bay Area rappers Dru Down, E-40, Richie Rich, Shock G, and Spice 1. The Luniz released their second single late in the fall of 1995. Playa Hata was the name of the track, and it was another dope record from the album. Playa Hata reached number 51 on the Billboard Hot R&B Singles chart and number 13 on the Hot Rap Singles chart. Operation Stackola turns 30 years old today and it sold over a million copies. The album peaked at number 20 on the Billboard 200 and topped the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts. Operation Stackola was a great album and the best one from the Luniz as a group.
