There’s a lot of home-related trends out there, right? Well, it’s been a thing for a long time, and while it used to be decade to decade, now it seems like it’s every couple of years or so. But even so, when a house is looking outdated, it has a way of showing itself. A fresh coat of paint is like putting on a brand-new outfit. It feels good, it looks cleaner, and for a moment, you think it changes everything. But then, you notice your shoes are still worn out, your bag is falling apart, and your hair could use a trim.
Now, this is a weird analogy, but it goes with the above, that dated look. And yeah, it’s no different for your home. Like, a gallon of paint might freshen up the walls, but it doesn’t hide the fact that some parts of your home are still stuck in another decade, waving proudly from 1987.
Sometimes, Paint isn’t Enough
If a home still has dated cabinets, funky bathroom tiles, old lighting, and furniture that belongs in a different era, it’s going to look tired no matter how fresh the walls are. While yes, sure, paint really does have a way of making a home look fresh, it can only do so much. But you need to understand, when it comes to a home renovation, there might be a chance that paint just won’t be enough, and instead, you might need help from professionals (since they work with outdated homes for a living).
Is Your Kitchen Refusing to Leave the Past?
Walk into almost any home built in the 80s, 90s, or even early 2000s, and you’ll probably spot those orangey-brown cabinets that were once considered the height of style. They’re practically like the low-rise jeans of kitchen design: everyone had them, and now everyone’s regretting it.
No matter how crisp the wall paint looks, those cabinets scream “blast from the past,” and not in a fun retro way. Basically, you’ll need to actually change the kitchen cabinetry (or really add some elements and fittings to them to make them look entirely different).
How About the Bathroom?
Actually, bathrooms are another big giveaway. Just go ahead and think about those funky color schemes from the ’70s and ’80s. For example, those avocado green tubs, mustard-yellow sinks, or entire walls of pastel pink tile might have been fashionable once, but today they make the space feel like a time capsule nobody asked for. It isn’t bad; some people love that character.
But you just need to keep in mind that you can paint the walls white all you want, but the second someone steps inside, they’ll know the bathroom hasn’t seen a real update since shoulder pads were cool.
Lighting Can Date a Room Instantly
Seriously, now, light fixtures can also betray a home’s age faster than anything else. Those old brass chandeliers, frosted glass domes, or bulky track lighting instantly tell visitors exactly when the house was last updated. Now, like above, it doesn’t mean they’re bad. Some people absolutely love these, and there’s nothing wrong with that either. But when was the last time you changed your lighting? Because it might be a good idea to look into it.
