DMX hit the scene back in 1998 by releasing two solo albums that year. It’s Dark and Hell is Hot dropped in May. It’s Dark and Hell is Hot is an iconic album that many artists have named as one of their favorites. It sold over four million copies. On December 22nd, DMX released his Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood project. The album sold well over five million copies and Slippin is one of my favorite records ever. Almost one year to the date, DMX returned with his third album. And Then There Was X was the name of it, and it sold almost 700,000 copies in the first week. And Then There Was X turns 25 years old today and it went 5X platinum. The album was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 2001 Grammys.
What’s My Name was the first single from the album, and it was released a week after the project dropped. This was a great track from X, but it didn’t get too high on the charts. The single peaked at #67 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. The music video features guest appearances from Jay-Z, Ja Rule, Ruff Ryders, Irv Gotti and Murder Inc. Party Up (Up in Here) was the second single from the project and it became one of X’s more popular tracks. The song was voted number 56 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of the ’00s. It was listed at No. 388 on Rolling Stone’s “Top 500 Greatest Songs of All Time” in 2021. The single sold over three million records, and it was used everywhere by everybody.
It’s played at Lincoln Financial Field at every Philadelphia Eagles home game every time the Philadelphia Eagles score a touchdown. It’s also used at Dodger Stadium and T-Mobile Park for the Seattle Mariners. The third and final single from And Then There Was X was a track that featured Sisqo from Dru Hill. What These Bitches Want was another classic record, but not as popular as Party Up. What These Bitches Want is one of the most popular X songs because him naming all the ladies in it. In August 2019, the song regained prominence on social media 19 years after its initial release date when a DMX challenge surfaced on the internet. For the challenge, women piece together photos and clips of themselves in various hairstyles, switching the images to the song’s lyrics to suggest that they’re a different person with every hairstyle.
This was another classic by the late, great DMX. As we all know, DMX passed away in April of 2021 and we later found out it was due to a heart attack. DMX will forever be known as one of the greatest rappers ever. They are still talking about his live performances and how other rappers didn’t want to follow him. Below are my top 5 tracks from the And Then There Was X album. After that, check out the track listing and stream link for the And Then There Was X project.
