My playlist was all over the place this past week. One that stood out was a mixtape full of old-school classic R&B jams. Isley Brothers, Teena Marie, The O’Jays, Shirley Murdock and many more were featured. As you can see there are plenty of options to be featured this week, but I’m going in another direction. If I were to compose a personal mixtape of my favorite slow jams one song would always appear. Tender Love by Force MDs is one of my favorite jams of all-time. The Force MDs group was formed back in 1981 in Staten Island, New York. Their style is composed of hip hop and some R&B. The band was originally named the L.D.s, and then became the Force MCs. The group has had many members over the years, and several are no longer with us.
In 1984, they signed with Tommy Boy Records and changed their name to Force MDs. Musical Diversity is what the MD stood for, and they dropped their first album in 1984. Love Letters was their first album and it experienced moderate success. The following year they dropped their second album called Chillin’. Tender Love was their hit single and it’s my featured Throwback Thursday track. Tender Love also appeared on the soundtrack to the popular Krush Groove movie. Tender Love is a classic record that was written and produced by the legendary Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Check out the video for Tender Love up above.
