Aaliyah was one of the fastest-rising R&B singers before her untimely demise. On August 25th, 2001, her plane crashed while leaving the Bahamas, killing her and eight passengers. Aaliyah was 22 years old at the time of her death. Despite passing away over 20 years ago, her music is still talked about. At the age of 15, she released her first album called Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number. Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number turns 30 years old, and it was a monumental album. Back & Forth was the first single from the album, and it shot up the charts after its release. The gold-selling single was received well by the public as well as the critics. Back & Forth dropped in the spring of 1994, but it was one of the biggest hits throughout the summer.
At Your Best (You Are Love) was another single that went gold for her. The single dropped in the summer of 1994, and it’s one of Aaliyah’s biggest hits. At Your Best (You Are Love) was originally released in 1976 on their Harvest for the World album. Aaliyah was a fan of the group, and after meeting lead singer Ronald Isley, she expressed to him how much she loved the song; eventually, he gave her the green light to record the song.
Aaliyah released a third single before the end of 1994, and it was the album title. Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number was another great track, but the most controversial of any of her tracks. During this time, we all learned she married R. Kelly. She was 15 years old at the time, and R. Kelly was 27.
We all know that R. Kelly is currently in prison due to his years of sickening antics. Aaliyah went on to release a couple more singles in 1995. Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number was a great album that sold over three million copies in the United States. After the album, she was crowned the Princess of R&B. She was nominated for numerous awards at a few award shows. Below are my top 5 tracks off the album, along with the track listing and stream link.
