Ras Kass was one of the illest lyricists that hit the scene in the mid-90s. He released his debut album, Soul on Ice back in 1996 and it was well-received. Soul on Ice was one of the many highlights of 1996. Two years later, Ras Kass returned with his follow-up to the Soul on Ice joint. Rasassination was the name of the album, and it was on my playlist this past week. Rasassination had its fair share of big name features unlike his first one. Dr. Dre, RZA, Kurupt, Mack 10, Xzibit, Twista, and Jazze Pha appeared on the album. The only single released off the album was Ghetto Fabulous. Ghetto Fabolous featured none other than Dr. Dre and Mack 10. During this time, Dr. Dre started his Aftermath label after leaving Death Row Records.
Mack 10 was still riding the success of the Westside Connection with Ice Cube and WC. Mack 10 also dropped his gold selling third album, The Recipe two weeks after the Rasassination project. Despite getting a feature from Dr. Dre and Mack 10 and having a more commercial sound it didn’t get a lot of buzz. Either way, it’s a dope record and it’s my featured Throwback Thursday track of the week. Check out the video for Ghetto Fabulous up above. Below you can peep at the track listing and stream link for the Rasassination album.
