The Wu-Tang Clan is known as one of, if not, the greatest hip hop group of all time. They released their iconic Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) album in November of 1993. The following year, Method Man became the first one to release a solo project. With the success of Tical from Method Man it opened the flood gates for all the members to release solo albums. Ol’ Dirty Bastard would release his debut album in March of 1995. A few months later, Raekwon would drop his highly anticipated project. Only Built 4 Cuban Linx was the name of it, and it’s also known as the Purple Tape. For the younger ones, the cassette tape was purple which is why the name was given. Raekwon was so dope during this time, it was between him, Nas and Biggie as the King of New York.
Heaven & Hell was the first single from Only Built 4 Cuban Linx. The single was released about nine months before the album dropped. Heaven & Hell was released for the film Fresh back in 1994, and it would be Raekwon’s first single. Heaven & Hell is a smooth track, and it was well-received by fans and critics. Criminology would become the second single, and it dropped a little over a month before the album was released. Like the first single, Ghostface Killah appeared on it and twelve other records from the album. Criminology was another banger from the album, which the entire project is dope. Ice Cream became the third and final single from Only Built 4 Cuban Linx. Ice Cream became his most popular record. Ice Cream was a record that described beautiful women as a metaphor.
The song featured Ghostface Killah, Method Man, and Cappadonna. The verse from Cappadonna was the most talked about, but the entire record is one of the many highlights of the album. Only Built 4 Cuban Linx has been on several lists as being one of the greatest hip hop albums ever. Only Built 4 Cuban Linx is one of those albums that there’s no skipping any record. Only Built 4 Cuban Linx is my favorite album from members of the Wu Tang Clan. Raekwon just released his 8th solo album, The Emperor’s New Clothes, back on July 18th. The new album is amazing and one you can check out below also. Check out my top 5 tracks from the album. After that, you can check the track listing and stream link for the project along with the new album.
