Usher Confessions Released 20 Years Ago Today

Usher Confessions Dropped 15 Years Ago Today

Usher is one of the biggest artists in the world today. Usher released his first album all the way back in August of 1994. Last month, he dropped his ninth album called Coming Home and it was followed by a major tour. Around the same time, Usher performed at halftime of the Super Bowl. To this day, Confessions is the best album by him and one of my all-time favorites of any genre. Usher dropped Confessions 20 years ago today and the marketing of this album was top tier. The biggest controversy from the album came about the mistress-impregnating concept of “Confessions Part II”. Due to the controversy and how great the album was, Confessions went on to sell over 15 million copies. Confessions has been named on numerous lists as one of the greatest albums ever. The first single released from the album featured Lil Jon and Ludacris.

Yeah! was the name of the track and is one of the biggest singles ever released. Yeah! sold over 13 million copies of just the single. The track was the most played song in 2004 and one of the biggest hits of the 2000s. Usher went in another direction for his second single and it was called Burn. Burn was another successful single, but not to the magnitude of Yeah! The single went on to sell over four million copies and is a classic slow jam. In 2016, Complex ranked the song number two on their list of the 25 greatest Usher songs. The controversial Confessions Part II was the third single from the album. The lyrics of “Confessions Part II” centers on a confession about impregnating a mistress. Usher tells his significant other that he impregnated his mistress.

“Confessions Part II” apologizes for what he had done in part one. Usher said of the song that right after he confessed with his real woman, he hoped she would still give him a chance. All of this combined with it being a dope song and Usher had another single to sell another three million. There have been a lot of remixes and parodies of this song over the years. Confessions Part II was also nominated for numerous awards also. The fourth single featured Alicia Keys and the track was called My Boo. This single was included on the re-release of the Confessions album. My Boo was another successful single selling over five million copies. During this time, Alicia Keys was also one of, if not the biggest artists in the world. My Boo was four music awards and nominated for another five.

Caught Up was the fifth and final single from the Confessions album. Caught Up was a more up-tempo track and it sold another million copies. This one didn’t live up to the previous singles as far as sales are concerned. Confessions earned Usher numerous accolades at the 47th Grammy Awards. This is one of my favorite projects of any genre ever and it has aged well. Check out my top 5 tracks from Confessions below.
