The NFL regular season kicks off with the Philadelphia Eagles hosting the Dallas Cowboys next Thursday night. Philadelphia blew out the Chiefs to become the Super Bowl LIX champions. The Eagles should be the top NFC team heading into the 2025 season, but are they? The defending champions will have several teams vying for the top spot. Detroit is hoping to be healthier and repeat its amazing season from a year ago. The Washington Commanders reached the NFC Championship game but now are dreaming of the Super Bowl. Green Bay, Minnesota, Dallas, the Los Angeles Rams, and San Francisco 49ers are also contenders. Check out my top 5 teams from the 2024 season. We have the top 5 AFC teams out of the way already. Philadelphia Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles are the defending Super Bowl champions. Jalen Hurts took home Super Bowl MVP after outperforming Patrick Mahomes. Hurts has been the talk of talk radio and social media when it comes to ranking amongst quarterbacks. Saquon Barkley is coming off a historic first season with the Eagles. Barkley had one of the greatest seasons ever for a running back. Can he duplicate it this season? Philadelphia managed to keep their core on defense, but lost half of its starters in free agency. The Eagles have drafted well, but they have questions in the secondary this year. Philadelphia boasts one of the toughest schedules this season. They may not finish with the best record in the NFC, but they should make the playoffs after being battle-tested. The Eagles are my top team in the NFC heading into the 2025.
Detroit Lions
Detroit has a lot of questions to answer this upcoming season. They were one of the favorites to make the Super Bowl last season finally. The defense had almost half of its players on injured reserve, and the Commanders ripped them apart in the Divisional round. Aiden Hutchinson returns after his horrific leg injury last year. Detroit bolstered its defense, and D.J. Reed was their big signing to help the secondary. On offense, the biggest question is how they will fare without having Ben Johnson as their offensive coordinator. Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery are still one of the best running back duos in the league. Jared Goff will try to prove naysayers wrong, especially after the departure of Ben Johnson. Can the Lions duplicate their success from a year ago? The NFC North will be tough, but they could be playing in the NFC title game this season.
Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers come in as my 3rd best team in the NFC heading into the 2025 season. Everything will revolve around Jordan Love and his continued improvement at the helm. Josh Jacobs enters his second season with the Packers. Jacobs had an amazing season, and he’s expected to repeat his performance. Green Bay signed Aaron Banks to bolster the offseason line and help protect Jordan Love. Green Bay drafted another speedy receiver in Matthew Golden in the first round of the NFL Draft. The receiving core for Green Bay is one of the best in the league. On defense, the Pack was one of the better ones in the league. The secondary got a boost when they signed CB Nate Hobbs to a four-year deal. Green Bay will be battling Detroit for NFC North supremacy again this upcoming season.
Los Angeles Rams
The third and fourth teams were a toss-up between the Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Rams. The Rams are my fourth-best team in the NFC heading into the 2025 season. The health of Matthew Stafford is the main reason for placing the Packers above them. Matthew Stafford has battled a back injury that kept him sidelined throughout the preseason. The Rams were able to sign Davante Adams to pair with Puka Nacua. Adams is a future Hall-of-Famer that still has a lot in the tank. The young defense should be one of the better defenses in the league. The Rams are my favorite to win the NFC West this season. The fate of their season will come down to the back of Matthew Stafford. If Stafford stays healthy all season, this team could represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.
Washington Commanders
The Washington Commanders will look to capitalize on their success from a year ago. Jayden Daniels had arguably one of the best rookie seasons ever. As with any quarterback on their rookie deal, the Commanders continued to build around Daniels. Washington added some protection for Daniels by trading for Laremy Tunsil. The Commanders traded a lot for the All-Pro offensive lineman. Washington also traded for Pro Bowl receiver Deebo Samuel from the 49ers. Samuel will give the offense another dynamic weapon. Washington was able to sign Terry McLaurin to a 3-year extension worth $96 million. The defense will continue to build on their momentum from a year ago. They added veteran pass rusher in Von Miller. Miller can still get after the quarterback with the best of them in the league. The Commanders are my 5th best team in the NFC heading into the 2025 season.
