J. Cole is one of the greatest rappers of this new generation. Cole began his career with his classic mixtape called The Come Up back in 2007. Two years later, J. Cole released his mixtape called The Warm Up. The following year he dropped the Friday Night Lights mixtape, and we all thought it was another classic. The following year, Cole World: The Sideline Story was his major label debut. The album went platinum, and it wasn’t a bad project at all. Less than two years later, J. Cole returned with his Born Sinner joint. Born Sinner made Cole a superstar with it going triple platinum. With that album, you can tell Cole was starting to come into his own. The following year, J. Cole dropped his third album, and it was called 2014 Forest Hills Drive.
The album’s title is the address of a home in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where Cole lived from his early youth. The classic 2014 Forest Hills Drive album turns 10 years old today. Born Sinner made J. Cole a star, but 2014 Forest Hills Drive turned him into a megastar. The album sold well over five million copies. It went on to win Album of the Year at the 2015 BET Hip Hop Awards. It also won the Top Rap Album award at the Billboard Music Awards. 2014 Forest Hills Drive appeared on a lot of lists for best album in 2014. Rolling Stone listed it as one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time. Apparently was the first single from the album and it sold over two million copies. Apparently is a good track and a nice way to introduce the album.
Wet Dreamz was the second single from the 2014 Forest Hills Drive album. This was another dope record off the album, and it moved over four million units. No Role Modelz was the third single from the project. No Role Modelz is one of my favorite tracks from the album and J. Cole himself. The track was a popular one and it moved over six million units in the United States. Love Yourz was the fourth and final single from the 2014 Forest Hills Drive joint. Love Yourz was the lowest selling single out of the four, but it’s probably my favorite. The single went platinum, and he released it in February of 2016. Overall, this 2014 Forest Hills Drive album is a classic. This is my favorite album by J. Cole by far.
J. Cole caught a lot of heat from fans and critics for stepping to the side during the Drake and Kendrick beef. Cole went away for a while but has since returned with a couple of features. He’s prepping his new album, The Fall Off and hopefully it’ll arrive sooner than later. Recently, Cole released 3 classic mixtapes from the years of 2007 to 2010 to digital streaming platforms. Check out my top 5 tracks below. After that, check out the track listing and stream link to the album.
