Trav’s 2024 Conference Championship Picks

The college football regular season has come to an end and now we have the conference championship games. My regular season finale picks garnered a 10-3 record. My overall record is now 76-27 and my winning percentage jumps from 73.3% to 73.8%. The big upset this weekend saw Michigan defeat Ohio State for the fourth consecutive year. The end of the game saw a brawl between the two teams, and this was my first loss. In a battle of South Carolina, the Gamecocks took down the Tigers on the road for my second loss. The final loss was also a loss when Syracuse upset the Miami Hurricanes. The loss cost Miami a shot at playing in the ACC Championship game. We have the conference championship games this weekend. I’ll be predicting five games this weekend with these games affecting the college football playoffs.

We begin things with the Big Ten Championship game. The 3^rd ranked Penn State Nittany Lions will take on the top ranked Oregon Ducks. Penn State has one blemish on their record and that came against Ohio State. The Nittany Lions had a couple scares but dominated most of their opponents most of the season. The defense has only lowed an average of 14 points a game, how will they handle the Ducks offense? Can they pull off the upset? Oregon is the only unbeaten team in college football this season. They have dominated both sides of the ball. The offense is high powered, and the defense ranks in the top 10 for scoring. Can they remain undefeated as they head into the playoffs? In a close battle between these teams, I’m going with the Ducks to win. Oregon Win 31-27

We have another battle of top 5 teams, and this is for the SEC Championship. The 2^nd ranked Texas Longhorns will battle the 5^th ranked Georgia Bulldogs. Georgia comes into this game with a 10-2 record after having one of the toughest schedules this year. One of their wins came against this Texas team on the road. The Bulldogs are coming off an instant classic against Georgia Tech where the game went into 8 overtimes. Will that affect this Bulldogs team? Texas only had one loss this season and it came at home against this Georgia team. The Longhorns advanced to this game after beating their rival Aggies on the road last weekend. We will most likely see Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning in this contest. Both teams should still get into the playoffs, but I’m going Longhorns to avenge their lone defeat. Texas Win 34-31

We have the ACC Championship game as the 8^th ranked SMU Mustangs take on the 18^th ranked Clemson Tigers. SMU comes into this game as the only unbeaten team in ACC play. The only loss they suffered this season came against BYU earlier in the season. The Mustangs didn’t have Miami, Clemson or Syracuse this season. With a win, the Mustangs will earn a first round bye in the playoffs. If they lose, they should get a playoff spot. For Clemson, this is their only way to reach the playoffs. Clemson enter this game with a 9-3 record. With a loss, they will not reach the playoffs with four losses. The Tigers defense was one of the better ones in the final month of the season. In a close one, I’m going with the Mustangs to win. SMU Win 27-17

We have the Big 12 Championship game as the 16^th ranked Iowa State Cyclones battle the 12^th ranked Arizona State Sun Devils. The Cyclones won their first seven games of the season. They lost back to back games and finished the season with three wins in a row. Iowa State defeated Kansas State in the season finale to earn the right to play in this game. This is their chance to make the playoffs, but can they stop the red-hot Sun Devils? Arizona State finished the season as one of the hottest teams in the country. The Sun Devils finished on a 5-game winning streak and two of those wins came against Kansas State and BYU. I’ve become a huge fan of this team and their running back, Cam Skattebo. They will be without Jordyn Tyson, and this will help the Cyclones in the upset. Iowa State Win 31-30

We head over to the Mountain West and their championship game. The 19^th ranked UNLV Rebels will take on the 10^th ranked Boise State Broncos. The Rebels fell to this Boise State team about a month ago. They have won their final four games ever since that loss. The Rebels endured their quarterback, Matthew Sluka leaving the program earlier in the season over money. Could they turn that loss into a playoff berth with a win over Boise State? Boise State has only one blemish on their record, and it came against Oregon. They lost the second game of the season on the road to Oregon and that was it. Ashton Jeanty is having a historic season and he’s my Heisman Trophy frontrunner. Can they win and head into the playoffs? I’m going with the Broncos to win and get into the playoffs. Boise State Win 31-21
