Mary J. Blige My Life Album Turns 30 Years Old

Mary J. Blige is one of the greatest singers of this and any generation. In 1992, Blige released her debut album called What’s the 411? The album was a success by selling over three million copies. In 2020, the album was ranked 271 on Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” list. A little over two years later, Mary J. Blige returned with her My Life album. What’s the 411? was an amazing album and My Life was just as good. Mary J. Blige My Life album turns 30 years old today and it sounds just as good now. My Life became Mary J. Blige’s second album to reach the top ten on the Billboard 200 chart. In 1996, the album was nominated for Best R&B Album at the 38th Grammy Awards. It also won the 1995 Billboard Music Award for Top R&B Album.

My Life would have five tracks released as singles. Be Happy was the first single and it was released about a month before the album. Be Happy wasn’t her best track, but a nice way to roll out the My Life album. I’m Goin Down was her second single, and it was one of my favorite songs off the album. Mary J. Blige remade the original by Rose Royce back in 1976. Blige’s version peaked at number thirteen on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Mary Jane (All Night Long) was the third single released from the My Life project. The track was a mix of All Night Long by the Mary Jane Girls and Close the Door by Teddy Pendergrass. The track peaked at number 37 on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart. You Bring Me Joy was the fourth single dropped from the album.

The song is built around a sample of It’s Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next to Me by Barry White. The fifth and final single from My Life was I Love You. I Love You was featured on the B-Side of her You Bring Me Joy single. I Love You was another good track from the album by Mary J. Blige. My Life has been on several lists of greatest albums of all time. The album was recognized by Apple Music as the 86th best album of all time in 2024 on the Apple Music 100 Best Albums list. The My Life album is a great one, but it’s not to be compared to her first one. Many of the topics on My Life deal with clinical depression. She’s stated she was battling drugs, alcohol and in an abusive relationship. At the time, this was her most personal project.

A special commemorative edition of the album was released on November 20, 2020. The following year after the release of her My Life album, Mary was a part of another classic release. She made an appearance on the Waiting to Exhale Soundtrack. Not Gon Cry was one of the many highlights from the soundtrack. Check out my top 5 tracks from the My Life album below.
