Prince is known as one of the best musicians and entertainers to ever live. Prince first hit the scene back in 1978. He went on to release an album every year from 1978 to 1982. In 1984, Prince returned with his sixth album called Purple Rain. Purple Rain would become his most successful album by selling over 25 million albums worldwide. Purple Rain became Prince’s first album to reach number one on the Billboard 200. The album spent 24 consecutive weeks atop the Billboard 200 and was present on the chart for a total of 167 weeks. Purple Rain was the movie released during this time and this is the soundtrack for it. There was a total of five singles released off Purple Rain. The first single from Purple Rain was When Doves Cry. When Doves Cry is my featured Throwback Thursday track for this week.
When Doves Cry was Prince’s first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single, staying there for five weeks, and was also a worldwide hit. According to Billboard, it was the top-selling single of 1984. It is certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). When Doves Cry was ranked number one on the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 singles of 1984. This is one of my all time favorite songs by Prince. Unfortunately, Prince passed away on April 21, 2016 when he was found unresponsive in his elevator. Prince would release an unprecedented 39 studio albums along with another music. Check out the video for When Doves Cry up above.
