The 90s were so special that many have called it the greatest decade ever. Seeing this is my childhood, you will not get an argument from me. Being a parent now, it’s crazy to see a lot of our styles came back. There are other things that could never be duplicated like having no social media. We had great shows on TV that the entire family could watch together. The 90s is known as the decade of peace and prosperity. Despite being much older now, those memories have never left and hopefully they never will. Below are 16 signs you grew up in the 90s.

Great Candy to Choose From

We had neighborhood candy stores and a couple of ladies who sold it out of their house. Bazooka Bubblegum, Ring Pops, Pop Rocks, Now & Later, Laffy Taffy and Fun Dip were some of my favorite 90s candy. There are plenty of candy brands that still sell their products in store. You can also find a lot of places online to find some of your favorite candy from the 90s.

Being Outside and No Technology

As kids in the 90s, we were outside from sunrise to sunset. It just wasn’t a couple kids here and there, but it was everywhere. As youngsters, we played in the creek and just explored throughout the woods. As we got older, we played basketball and football against each other in all types of weather. Let’s just say this, our punishment was we couldn’t go outside. You will see a few kids outside, but not like it was in the 90s.

Watching TGIF every Friday with Your Family

Friday nights were the time we used to sit together as a family and watch television. Throughout the years, we had the opportunity to watch some all-time classic comedies. Family Matters, Perfect Strangers, Boy Meets World, Full House, and Dinosaurs were some of the shows. The TGIF lineup was something to look forward to as a family.

Before CDs were a thing, we all had to have a Walkman. Of course, you had to have your cassette tape of your favorite artist. The CDs came along and that changed the game. We all had CD books and a CD Walkman also. This was all before the MP3 player, iPod and now we have streaming.

VHS Tapes and VCRs

We all had that show, episode or game we wanted to see, but wouldn’t be at home. We had that trusty VCR and VHS tapes to record it. This was before there was a TiVo or DVR. The VHS tapes weren’t as reliable, but it was all we had. Before DVDs, we had VHS tapes of our favorite movies or shows.

Remember the Y2K Bug?

Do you remember when the world was supposed to end? The Y2K bug was supposed to hit, and all computers were to be shutdown. It was crazy times where we had to turn our computers off before midnight on 12/31/1999.

AOL Internet CDs

In the early-to-mid 90s, AOL used to mail a ton of CDs to get you to sign up for the internet. Yes, there were times when you couldn’t access the internet with your phone. Crazy, isn’t it? Not only did they show up in your mailbox, but they started adding them to cereal boxes. For the younger crowd reading this, AOL stands for America Online.

Blockbuster Video

Before there was a Netflix, we had Blockbuster Video. Remember those VHS tapes from earlier? Technology wasn’t advanced to the point where we could see any movies on our TVs or tablets. We went to Blockbuster Video to rent our favorite movie after it became available to the public. As we got older, we also would rent our favorite video game. There is a little more information about gaming below.

Monday Night Wars

If you’re not a wrestling fan, then you may want to skip this one. The WWE was called the WWF, and they had a nice feud with WCW in the late 90s. WCW was based here in Atlanta, and they had a great product. When they introduced the NWO, it changed the landscape of wrestling forever. On Monday Nights, them and WWE came on at the same time and we used to flip the channel back and forth to watch both. Unfortunately, Vince McMahon and the WWE bought them out in 2001. The Monday Night Wars were legendary.

Great Hip Hop and RnB Music

Many called hip hop in the mid-90s the second Golden Era. There was so much great music coming from everywhere. The west coast produced Death Row Records, Ice Cube, Ice-T, and many others. In the east, the Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, Biggie, Jay-Z and others reign supreme. In the south, Suave House Records, Outkast, UGK, Three Six Mafia, Geto Boys and Scarface represented. In the Midwest, Bone-Thigs-N-Harmony, Do or Die, Crucial Conflict, Twista, Common and many more did their thing. In the 90s, everyone had their own sound. The RnB side of things also produced their fair share of great music. Jodeci, Keith Sweat, Mary J. Blige, Jagged Edge, 112, and others put out great music.

The Streetlights Were Your Curfew

We had a curfew when we were outside, and it was the streetlight. It didn’t matter if it was your parents, grandparents or your spent the night somewhere. The same applied everywhere, make sure you’re in this house before the streetlights come on.

Fashion

We love our colors back in the 90s. Cross Colours come to mind when you think about fashion. There were other brands, but Cross Colours was my thing in high school. A lot of the shoes we wore are either in style or coming back. Of course, we loved our Jordans, but there were other sneakers we rocked. Nike put out classics like Bo Jackson, Ken Griffey Jr., Deion Sanders, Andre Agassi and a few others.

Nintendo and Sega

Nowadays, the kids have Xbox and PlayStation. The PlayStation debuted in 1995, and this is something that didn’t interest me. In the 90s, we played Nintendo and Sega.  We had some legendary battles with both consoles. When playing the Nintendo, we loved Double Dribble and Tecmo Bowl. The Sega came along and my love for Madden started. We also played NBA Live, Bill Walsh College Football and NCAA Basketball. There were some other games we played, but those were the main ones.

Back then, we didn’t have cell phones but had landline phones. We had multiple throughout the house, but only person can be on it. There were so many times my parents got on the phone and started dialing while I’m on there. Also, you had a curfew for phone calls also and your parents would always catch you after hours.

Your Cousins Were Like Your Brothers and Sisters

These are probably some of the best times of my life. In the late 80s to early 90s, my cousins felt like my brothers and sisters. We would spend the night with each other sometimes. If we’re lucky, our grandparents would let us all spend the night over their house.
