Salt-N-Pepa is one of the most iconic groups ever in hip hop. They were some of the most influential females in the rap game. They released their first album back in December of 1986. Hot, Cool & Vicious was the name of the project and they reached platinum status. Push It was the only single and it is still one of the greatest rap records to this day. It has been sampled numerous times and it has transcended multiple generations. Push It was nominated for a Grammy Award back in 1987. I’ll Take Your Man was another classic record and one that Mia X remixed for her Unlady Like album. In August of 1988, Salt-N-Pepa released their second album called A Salt with a Deadly Pepa. They earned a gold plaque within the year where we called the original golden era of hip hop.
In 1990, Salt-N-Pepa released their third album called Blacks’ Magic. Blacks’ Magic would go platinum as they dropped a total of six singles from the album. In 1993, they released my overall favorite album from them, and it was called Very Necessary. Very Necessary went an unprecedented 5X platinum. This is one of the albums that was played this week and it’s just amazing. The first single from the Very Necessary album was Shoop and it was a huge record. The second single was just as big, if not bigger and it was Whatta Man. Whatta Man is my featured Throwback Thursday joint for this week. You may have heard them talk about this video throughout the years because 2Pac was featured in it. A couple years ago, Salt revealed the reason Pac’s face was cut out of the video.
Either way, check out the video for Whatta Man up above. Below you can check out the track listing and stream link for their Very Necessary album.
