Destiny’s Child The Writing’s on the Wall Turns 25 Years Old

Before Beyonce became a worldwide phenomenon, she was a part of a group named Destiny’s Child. Destiny’s Child formed back in 1990 in Houston, and they were called Girl’s Tyme. Fast forward to 1997, they were Destiny’s Child and were signed to Columbia Records. The following year they released their debut album, and it was called Destiny’s Child. They reminded me a lot of En Vogue when the album and it received mixed reviews. The project went platinum, but the group wasn’t satisfied. Destiny’s Child sought transition from the record’s neo soul-influenced sound. Hence, the group took more creative control and enlisted an almost entirely different array of collaborators. They released their second album, The Writing’s on the Wall the following year. Destiny’s Child The Writing’s on the Wall turns 25 years old today. Bills, Bills, Bills was their first single from the album, and it went platinum.

Bills, Bills, Bills was definitely a different sound from Destiny’s Child. The up-tempo track became their first number one single on the Billboard 100 charts. In the summer of 1999, they released their second single called Bug A Boo. Despite being another good track, it didn’t have the same success as Bills, Bills, Bills. The third single was called Say My Name, and it was a monster hit. The triple platinum single became their third best selling single in the United States. Say My Name is remembered as being one of the best songs of the 90s. The track has been on several lists over the years and is still one of the more popular records. The Writing’s on the Wall has sold over 13 million records worldwide. In the United States alone, the album is 8x platinum.

Almost a year after the album dropped, they released their fourth and final single. Jumpin’, Jumpin’ was the name of the single and it was another hit. The platinum selling single became one of the biggest hits to begin the 2000s. Overall, this was an amazing album and it helped launch Beyonce in the public eye to become a solo artist. The Writing’s on the Wall won the Soul Train Lady of Soul Award for Best R&B/Soul Album in 2000. The Writing’s on the Wall can be found on several lists of great and influential albums. Bills, Bills, Bills, So Good, Say My Name, Bug a Boo, and So Good are my top 5 tracks. Below you can check out the track listing and stream link for the Writing’s on the Wall album.
