No Limit Top Dogg from Snoop Dogg Released 25 Years Ago

Snoop Dogg is known as the most popular rapper in the world. You see him everywhere from commercials, movies, in the WWE, ESPN and now his Gin and Juice will sponsor the Arizona Bowl. Snoop was instrumental in the success of Death Row Records. The Chronic was a generational album that he played a major part in making and its success. The following year, he dropped his much anticipated Doggystyle album, and it was iconic. Unfortunately, Snoop was caught up in a murder case which derailed a lot of his momentum. The Doggfather album was released, and it wasn’t well received, but there was more going on. Dr. Dre left Death Row, Pac passed away and Suge Knight went to prison. Snoop went on to sign with No Limit Records after making appearances on some of their albums.

Da Game is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told dropped in the summer of 1998. Despite selling over a couple million albums many people weren’t feeling the album. The critics felt it was too southern for them, but I didn’t have a problem with it. Less than a year later, Snoop released his fourth studio album and second with No Limit. No Limit Top Dogg was the name of the album, and it had a more west coast sound to it. Dr. Dre, DJ Quik, and Meech Wells handled the bulk of the production. No Limit Top Dogg gained more positive reviews from critics. G Bedtime Stories was the first single and it was one that didn’t do anything for me. Bitch Please was his second single and it was a major hit during this time. Bitch Please featured Xzibit and Nate Dogg and it was a smash hit.

The third and final single from No Limit Top Dogg was another classic called Down for My N’s. This was a collaborative joint with C-Murder with it also being featured on his Trapped in Crime album. This was a major hit on the radio and college bands also. Snoop Dogg and C-Murder were joined by Magic on the track. The album cover also marks a significant departure from the usual design style of all No Limit releases. Regarding this decision, Master P stated, “When you look at that Snoop record, you know, you let Snoop be himself.” No Limit Top Dogg was a good album, but I’m still leaning towards his first No Limit album as being better.
