Onyx is one of the instrumental groups of hip hop in the early to mid-90s. The group consisted of Fredro Starr, Sonny Seeza, Big DS and Sticky Fingaz. The group formed in 1988 with Sticky Fingaz joining in 1991. The group dropped their first album in 1991 called Bacdafucup. The album went platinum, and they were a phenomenon during that time. Bacdafucup went on to win a Soul Train Award for Best Rap album in 1994. Between the album title and cover, it was a talk about album and Slam was their big single. Slam went platinum and during this time, me and my friends had bald heads due to Onyx. Two years later, Onyx released their second album called All We Got Iz Us. This was another great album from Onyx, but it didn’t reach platinum status like their debut.
In March 1994, Fredro Starr was on the set of Dangerous Minds, Lyor Cohen offered him a million dollars for recording a new album. Big DS left the group at the same time to start a solo career. Onyx recorded 25 songs for this album, but only 15 of them were included on the album by Jam Master Jay’s decision. All We Got Iz Us this name was chosen because it is much grimier than Bacdafucup. Live Niguz was the first single from the album and it was also just called Live. This track was also featured on The Show Soundtrack. My featured Throwback Thursday joint is Last Dayz. Last Dayz was their second single and it’s probably my favorite Onyx joint ever. Check out the track Last Dayz up above.
