Russell Wilson has been told that he will be released on March 13th. Wilson spent the first 10 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. He was traded to the Broncos following the 2021 season and expectations were high. After an abysmal first year in Denver, many thought Wilson had fallen off. Denver brought in Sean Payton to coach Wilson in 2023 and it came with a lot of turmoil. Despite the issues with Payton, he put up great numbers, but was benched towards the end of the season. The writing was on the wall and now it’s official that Russell Wilson will not be a part of the Broncos organization moving forward. They have allowed him to talk to teams before he’s released. Las Vegas Raiders
The Las Vegas Raiders have officially hired Antonio Pierce as their new head coach. Pierce had a great showing as coach after having been named the interim coach last season. The Raiders are looking to compete with the likes of the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers in the AFC West. They will need to upgrade their quarterback position to do so. They released Jimmy Garoppolo, and they still have Aiden McConnell under contract. Wilson would be an upgrade at the quarterback position for the Raiders. The addition of Russell Wilson could also boost the morale of DaVante Adams.
New England Patriots
New England will have the 3rd overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. This year’s quarterback class is a strong one and they could draft a new signal caller. They could bring back Mac Jones, but that seems highly unlikely. The Patriots have the most cap space entering free agency. New England has over $100 million dollars to spend. With Wilson being paid $39 million from the Broncos, would he take a pay cut? They could build the team up quickly with that kind of money and having a quarterback on a cheap deal. The new coach, Jerrod Mayo will look to make a splash and Russell Wilson would do just that.
Atlanta Falcons
Atlanta is arguably a good quarterback away from being a serious contender in the NFC. I’ve stated there’s 6 options for the Atlanta Falcons in 2024 and Wilson is one of them. Having two good running backs in Bijon Robinson and Tyler Allgeier is appealing to any quarterback. You add Kyle Pitts and Drake London, this Falcons team are favorites in the NFC South. The other side is the personal side of things. Russell Wilson is married to Ciara, and she was once married to Future. The whole thing with Future son and his relationship with Wilson has been much talked about. Would Russell Wilson even want to play in Atlanta?
Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers are another team that would be in a better position with better quarterback play. Pittsburgh drafted Kenny Pickett a couple years ago, but the offense hasn’t improved much. The offense looked better with Mason Rudolph, but he’s not the solution either. The Steelers also have a pair of good running backs who Russell could lean on. The Bucs are most likely a long shot to land Wilson. The organization seems like they want to bring back Baker Mayfield for the long term. You never know what will happen when it comes to negotiating a new contract. Mayfield had a career resurrection after signing with Tampa on a cheap one-year deal. The Bucs have already resigned Mike Evans to a 2-year extension. You would think that would mean the Bucs will do everything in their power to keep Baker. If that doesn’t happen, Russell Wilson would be a great addition to the team.
Minnesota Vikings
Last, but not least, we have the Minnesota Vikings. When Kirk Cousins went down with his Achilles injury, it showed how much Minnesota needed another quarterback. Minnesota could always bring back Kirk Cousins. Cousins had an amazing six years with the Vikings, but they never got over that hump. The Vikings could opt to go in another direction. Cousins will be 36-years old and will be coming on an Achilles injury. Russell Wilson and any other quarterback would love to be able to throw to Justin Jefferson.
