The Chiefs Defeat Niners in OT Classic to Repeat

The Kansas City Chiefs are your Super Bowl LVIII champions. The Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in an overtime classic. Kansas City becomes the first NFL team to go back-to-back to since the 2003-2004 New England Patriots. At the age of 28, Patrick Mahomes has now won three Super Bowls in four appearances. In those games, he has taken home three Super Bowl MVPs. What’s crazy is that my Super Bowl prediction was almost spot-on seeing my score was 26-24 in favor of the Chiefs. After the Niners drove down the field in overtime they kicked a field goal. The new overtime rules states that both teams would get a possession. Kansas City drove down the field and Patrick Mahomes hit Mecole Hardman for a 3-yard touchdown to win the game. What’s next for both teams?

Kansas City Chiefs

This marked the 3rd championship for the Chiefs in five years. You can call them a dynasty now seeing they’ve appeared in four of the last five Super Bowls. Patrick Mahomes is only 28 years old and has yet to enter his prime. There are many people calling him the greatest with what he’s accomplished in such a short amount of time. With Mahomes at the helm, the Chiefs have a shot at winning it every season. Travis Kelce has said he will return for another season. Kansas City has several free agents on the team including Chris Jones. Jones held out at the start of this season but will hit free agency. Rashee Rice has emerged as a top target for Mahomes, but they will need help at the receiver position. The Chiefs should be one of the top teams along with the Ravens, Bengals, Bills, and Texans.

San Francisco 49ers

San Francisco fell to the Chiefs for the second time in four years. The 49ers loaded up their team to make this run they did. Brock Purdy is their quarterback of the future and he’s still on his rookie deal. San Francisco will have at least one more year to build a championship team around him. After the 2024 season, the Niners will have to pay Purdy and he’s not going to be cheap. The 49ers have a lot of guys that will be free agents this upcoming offseason. Key players like Nick Bosa, Deebo Samuel, Trent Williams and Christian McCaffrey are under contract. Brondon Aiyuk is set to play on the fifth-year option. The offense is set, and the defense will maintain some of its key players. Unfortunately, it looks like Dre Greenlaw could miss next season after his Achilles injury in the Super Bowl.

San Francisco will be one of the favorites in the NFC to return to the Super Bowl but will have competition. The Eagles, Lions, Cowboys, Packers, and Rams could be early contenders also.

The Game

Super Bowl LVIII was a great game, and you can say it was an instant classic. The first quarter we saw a lot of feeling out and great defensive play. The first score of the game came on a Jake Moody field goal to put the Niners up 3-0. San Francisco used a trick play where Jauan Jennings threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Christian McCaffrey. Harrison Butker kicked a 28-yard field goal at the end of the half. Butker kicked a record breaking 57-yard field goal to put into the Niners lead. After a muffed punt, the Chiefs recovered and scored on a 16-yard pass to Marquez Valdes-Scantling. San Francisco drove down the field and scored on a 10-yard pass from Brock Purdy to Jauan Jennings to take a 16-13 lead. The Niners had the PAT blocked and that was huge.

The Chiefs drove downfield and Butker kicked a 24-yard field goal to tie the game at 16. With less than two minutes remaining in the game, Jake Moody kicked a 53-yard field goal to put the Niners ahead 19-16. Mahomes and the offense drove down the field and Butker kicked a 29-yard field goal with 3 seconds left. San Francisco had the ball first in overtime and they managed a field goal with less than 8 minutes remaining. The Chiefs offense went 75 yards in a little over 7 minutes to win the game. A lot of players on the Niners team said they weren’t aware of the new overtime rules.
